Attorney General Eric Holder says the U.S. has started criminal and civil investigations into the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The probes will center on environmental-law violations. The Washington Post reports the criminal side of the investigation might look at false statements, obstruction, etc. Legal experts said this means that investigators are exploring whether BP ignored warning signs before the explosion, falsified records or statements to regulators, or tampered with testing equipment.
